Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale gives us the origin of one of DC’s most mysterious characters. Through the heartbreak, frustrations, and friendships, we see her as a young woman shaping her worldview. With a strong story and compelling artwork, it’s a volume that’s completely necessary in understanding what drives this powerful woman.
Catwoman has always been a complex character, skirting the line between hero and villain. Her background remained a mystery, seemingly filled with nothing but a life of crime and underground activities. In this new take on Selina Kyle’s origin story, we see her troubled home life and the difficulties she faces trying to get by. She lacks a supportive family and that terrible home environment filled with deplorable abuse leads her to the streets. There are many shockingly violent scenes depicting abuse and bullying. This highlights a reality many kids unfortunately face and ultimately shows a young woman overcoming that abuse with the help of a new support system.
It’s most interesting to see her learn her cat-like skills and to develop the identity of her precursor, Catgirl. She’s one of the few characters without superpowers, but her stealth and training give her an edge above her enemies. Though her actions are typically lawbreaking, she isn’t trying to hurt the world. I have a new understanding of her character after reading this volume, and that’s exactly what I was looking for.
I loved the artwork and it’s single color style. It feels like we’re constantly in the dark, a state that Catwoman is well known for. The color scheme helped me connect more with her.
Overall, Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale is an essential addition to the Catwoman story. Young Catwoman is complex, powerful, and in many ways, admirable. She’s influenced by so many things and getting a background helps you to understand her frequent vendettas in the DC universe.
