‘miscellaneous notes from the time an alien came to band camp disguised as my alto sax’ Short Review

miscellaneous notes from the time an alien came to band camp disguised as my alto sax is a brilliant story for the title alone. I gravitated to it immediately.

The narrative voice was spot on, creating this high school sitcom feel that made the whacky alien fit in perfectly. Everything is sexual innuendos and high school crushes, intermixed with intense competitiveness for first chair. There’s so much in this story that was hilarious to me, primarily because I was a band geek myself and played sax for 8 years.

The alien concept is brilliant as well. This alien appears and it’s only strange for a second, then it transforms into her crush and we hear all about how dreamy he is. Cut to the alien becoming the saxophone and somehow creating music. There’s a mention of Kenny G, which to a kid who learned to play sax in the 90s is the ultimate throwback. The real kicker for me was the Little Mermaid moment where the alien becomes a Sebastian character and egged her on to ask him out.

Needless to say, this is a brilliant short with witty dialogue, a hilarious protagonist, and a sci-fi twist that doesn’t seem out of the ordinary.
