The Winter of the Witch: A Battle to Save the World

The Winter of the Witch is full to the brim with magical realms and dark powers to fascinate and fear. This stunning final novel of the Winternight Trilogy sees Vasya growing into her truest form, as a savior of Russia, unafraid of the men who tried to stunt her, allied with the forces she was once reluctant to fully accept. Arden embraces the world of magic, taking us deeper into the secrets of Vasya’s past than we’ve ever been before. Prepare for a journey that brings the magic of fairy tales to life and shows us what happens when old and new combine forces for the greater good.

NOTE: I was provided a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest, unbiased review. I only publish reviews of books I enjoy, and this novel meets that criterion.

A Few of My Favorite Things

VASYA FINDS HER POWER

Vasya’s magical abilities have never been in doubt. From the beginning, she’s been able to see every spirit and being. Now, her power has grown and she finally comes into her own. The book is an epic journey through hidden realms that could easily devour her. She comes out stronger than before and confident in her abilities. To see her running full force, trying to save the world and full of confidence, is the future I had always hoped for her. There has always been a reluctance within her, a fear of leaving behind the human world, and she casts that aside to embrace who she is.

MYSTERIES OF THE WORLD REVEALED

The true strength of The Winter of the Witch lies in the spotlight given to the magical realms. Vasya meets being after being, making alliances, learning about her past, and working hard to shape her future. The Midnight realm is both terrifying and fascinating as a concept. We get to learn about her family’s past, a story that I’ve been desperate to discover. We get up close and personal with the Bear and the Winter King, learning about their abilities and their incredibly complex relationship with humanity. This is epic storytelling at its best.

COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIPS ON DISPLAY

Vasya’s relationships are the central driving force in her life, and we see the true complexities of those pairings throughout. Her love story with the Winter King is anything but average, with each tied to their own worlds and reluctant to fully commit. Their connection is undeniable and seeing them together is both exciting and heartbreaking. Her family is her heart, always driving her forward to better the world, and those relationships are constantly being picked at by her actions. Everything has been so carefully wrought throughout the series and the depth pays off here.

A FAVORITE CHARACTER

I’m obsessed with the little mushroom spirit named Ded Grib. He is hilarious, pompous, and incredibly dedicated to Vasya when she needs it most. Every time he popped up, I smiled. I promise you’ll love him too!
